Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” IV degree of the former President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, follows from the decree published on the official Internet portal of legal information.
Berdimuhamedov was awarded “for his great contribution to strengthening the strategic partnership between the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan,” the document says.
In 2017, Putin awarded then-President of Turkmenistan Berdymukhammedov the Order of Alexander Nevsky. The decree stated that the Turkmen leader was awarded for “ensuring stability and security in the Central Asian region.”
According to the Kremlin website, the last talks between Putin and Berdimuhamedov took place March 15, a few days before the latter left his post. Then Putin noted the great personal contribution of the outgoing president to the development of relations between Russia and Turkmenistan.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov served as President of Turkmenistan from February 2007 to March 2022. During his years in office, he received the title of arkadag (Turkm. “patron”) and fought the personality cult of his predecessor, Saparmurat Niyazov. In particular, the name of the ex-leader was removed from the anthem, the text of the oath for admission to school and work. In 2015, a gilded monument 21 meters high was erected to Berdimuhamedov himself.
In 2010, Berdymukhammedov was included in the list of the world's worst dictators according to The Foreign Policy magazine. In Turkmenistan and beyond its borders, the politician is known as an author of poetry and a performer. He released several songs, including a video clip about Rovach, a horse he shared with his grandson.
