Syrian president announces amnesty for terrorists

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree on amnesty for citizens of the country convicted of terrorist activities, SANA reports.

Amnesty applies to crimes committed before April 30, 2022, with the exception of actions that resulted in the death of people.

Since 2011, a civil war has been going on in Syria, in which several anti-government terrorist organizations are participating on the side of the opposition. One of the largest— «Islamic Front»— was created to counter the Assad government. It includes several groups, including Jaish al-Islam; and “Ahrar ash-sham”. The purpose of the organization— establishing control over Syria with the subsequent creation of an Islamic state. Other organizations involved in the conflict — “Islamic State” and “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” (both are recognized as terrorist in Russia and banned).

In January, the head of state announced an amnesty for all deserters, including those who fled the country on condition of voluntary appearance.

< p> In May last year, Assad signed a decree on a general amnesty. Those convicted for misdemeanors, offenses, crimes, including evasion of military service, were released from punishment.
