The widow of Gang of Four leader Andy Gill said putting together the compilation record The Problem of Leisure was a labor of Love.
“After Andy died, a small team of us dedicated ourselves to finishing and launching The Problem of Leisure: A Celebration of Andy Gill and Gang of Four,” Catherine Mayer said. “Now that the album is beautifully launched, we’ve set up a new Facebook page to celebrate Andy’s work, across all four decades of Gang of Four, as a guitarist and as a music producer, and to share some of the huge and wonderful trove of photographs, paintings, writings and unpublished music that he left behind. And stories. There are so many stories.”
The Problem of Leisure features all newly reinterpreted and recorded tracks from across Gang of Four’s 40-plus year career, each individually chosen by the artists’ who covered them. Musicians on the recording are Serj Tankian with Tom Morello, Gary Numan, La Roux, the Dandy Warhols, The Sounds, 3D (a.k.a. Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack) featuring the Nova Twins, Warpaint, Helmet, IDLES, Flea with John Frusciante, and many more.
Distributed by Ingrooves and released through the Gill Music label, The Problem of Leisure is available to download and stream and is also presented in a variety of physical formats.
The artwork was created by Damien Hirst. There are three gatefold double vinyl formats: The “dogluxe,” available only from The Gang of Four store (www.gangoffour.uk), is heavyweight red vinyl with a red sleeve and contains a six-sheet poster and a special googly eye on the front; The yellow vinyl and matching sleeve is only available from independent music retailers worldwide; and the black vinyl with the green sleeve is on sale everywhere.
There are two CD formats – a limited edition case-bound book with a googly eye and a gatefold digipak version. There is also a limited edition C90 cassette, with a pink body.
