Director Alexander Molochnikov will not participate in the production of the operas “Francesca da Rimini” Sergei Rachmaninoff and “The Florentine Tragedy” Alexander von Zemlinsky on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. This is stated in a letter from the director of the theater Vladimir Urin, which was at the disposal of News.ru.
“We inform you that the previously planned participation of Molochnikov A.A. in the production of two one-act operas at the Bolshoi Theater in the 2022-2023 season has been canceled»— Urin answered the request of a State Duma deputy from the party «Fair Russia— For the truth” Dmitry Kuznetsov. He sent an appeal in early August as part of the activities of the working group to investigate anti-Russian activities (GRAD) in the field of culture, of which he is the secretary. The deputy asked if the theater had labor relations with Molochnikov and demanded that the contract be suspended until the director's position on the special operation was clarified.
Urin responded by saying that Molochnikov “is not and has never been in an employment relationship.” with the Bolshoi Theatre.
Molochnikov told RBC that he has not yet commented on this information. The theater's press service said that on September 13, plans for the upcoming season, updated to take into account the cancellation of its productions, will be presented.
The creation of GRAD in early August was initiated by the Just Russia party. For the truth. It included deputies of several factions. The purpose of the group— “determine the main mechanisms for the implementation of foreign influence and anti-state activities in the field of culture.” It has no official status.
The deputies compiled a “list of agents of foreign influence”, which, in addition to Molochnikov and Urin, included the Bi-2 group, TV presenter Ivan Urgant and the general director of Channel One Konstantin Ernst (the latter “a request was sent to clarify the existence of contractual relations” Urgant and Channel One).

Urgant, in response, suggested renaming the group for investigating anti-Russian activities in the field of culture into the “Group for Detecting the Enemies of Our Society”, “since the abbreviation GRAD does not fully reflect the gigantic amount of work that you will have to face” ;.
GRAD accuses Molochnikov of “speaking publicly against the special operation [in Ukraine], supporting the appeal of artists and artistic directors against the SVO, and also declaring Russia's responsibility for the events in Kramatorsk and Bucha.” The group explains the listing of Urina by the presence of the operas “Florentine Tragedy”; and “Francesca da Rimini” Molochnikov in the theater's work plans for the new season.
Since the beginning of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, public figures, scientists, actors and musicians have spoken out against it. Two days after the outbreak of hostilities, the artistic director of the Theater of Nations Yevgeny Mironov published on his Instagram page (the social network is owned by the Meta company, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) an appeal signed by 17 leading cultural figures. Among them— People's Artists Oleg Basilashvili, Vladimir Spivakov and Alisa Freindlikh, General Director of the Bolshoi Theater Vladimir Urin and others.
