The attacker's name is Sergey Chernigovsky, he served in the department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Nizhny Novgorod, where he was a senior detective of the criminal investigation department.

According to Merkacheva, Chernigovskiy's former colleagues “notice oddities” about him, the major, when drinking, becomes aggressive “so much so that it could pose a real threat.” “This could explain the major’s hatred towards Kalyapin and his cries about the fact that there is a “task to kill”, — she believes.

Merkacheva told Interfax that after the attack, a criminal case was opened under Art. 119 of the Criminal Code (threat to kill or inflict grievous bodily harm), the maximum penalty under this article— five years in prison.

The HRC reported the incident with Kalyapin the day before. According to the Council, the man attacked the human rights activist, tried to cut his face and strangle him. Kalyapin said that the incident took place at the birthday party of his former colleague. The head of the HRC, Valery Fadeev, said that he did not see “any connection” between the attack and Kalyapin's human rights activities.
